Statewide ELL Programs in Colorado for Kindergarten to Adult Education
ELL/ESL Program will provide equal educational opportunities to all students. In 2018, our school served 2,300 students with approximately 120 English Language Learners (ELLs). This year, we expect to have around 300-500 ELL students. In Colorado, 11.9% of students are Spanish speakers and 59% are culturally and linguistically diverse speakers. Based from research and survey, there are over fifty native languages spoken in Colorado. We consider ELLs as assets in our schools and community. They will bring cultures and multilingualism. We will protect their rights for equal education, and support them to be successful in school. The paper will present the procedure, laws, grants and policies regarding ELL program.

SIG Featured Speaker: Dr. Deborah Palmer - Translanguaging in Multilingual Spaces: Strategies to empower identities, engage students, and support learning
What are translanguaging pedagogies and how do they fit into your classroom? How can you support students to develop biliteracy using languages you do not speak? Teachers who embrace a translanguaging stance and welcome students’ rich diverse language practices in their classrooms can create generative, dynamic spaces for learning – and support their students’ emergent bilingualism and academic achievement. By contrast, a classroom that fails to recognize and draw on students’ strengths and funds of knowledge risks shutting them down and putting a lid on learning. In this talk I will begin by defining translanguaging and making the case that translanguaging pedagogies can support your students’ learning of English, empower them to explore across the curriculum, and open up spaces for their families to engage in school. I’ll share resources and ideas for leveraging students’ linguistic and cultural repertoires for learning and empowerment in your classroom.
